「英語の音」をローマ字より先に──English before Romaji

学校でローマ字を習う前に、レクシスではフォニックス英会話を通して “本物の英語の音” を徹底的にインプットします。ローマ字は日本語の音節構造をベースにしているため、

  • cat → catto
  • bird → baddo

Phonics isn't Everything

At Lexis, we know that English is not a fully phonetic language like Hiragana, so we don't rely solely on phonics. Instead, we use it as a powerful tool to accelerate children's learning development. There is nothing phonetic about common English words like one or two, yet we emphasize memorization of sight words only when necessary. Too much sight reading can be overwhelming, but at the same time, no amount of phonics training can prepare students for non-phonetic words like rhythm, island, or epitome.

We recognize subtle pronunciation shifts in returnee students and correct them before they become habits.
Our phonics training helps Japanese-based learners gain the confidence to read and speak clearly.
We balance accuracy and fluency, so students don’t just sound correct—they sound natural.
Corrections are swift but gentle, ensuring students stay motivated and confident.

At Lexis, phonics isn’t just about learning to read—it’s a critical tool for shaping lifelong English fluency. Whether a student is learning English for the first time or maintaining their native-like speech after returning to Japan, our experienced teachers identify challenges early and guide students toward confident, natural English.

Phonics for General English (一般英会話) Students

At Lexis Language Center, phonics is a critical tool for helping learners develop clear pronunciation, reading fluency, and spelling accuracy. While our returnee students (帰国子女) typically transition out of phonics by age 8, phonics remains essential for students who have learned English primarily in Japan. Our structured approach ensures that all learners develop strong reading, writing, and speaking skills for long-term success.

How Lexis Uses Phonics in 一般英会話 (General English Courses):

  • Ages 2–8:
    • Building Core English Skills: Phonics is introduced early to help children connect letters and sounds, setting a foundation for reading.
    • Interactive Learning: Songs, stories, and hands-on activities ensure students learn naturally through engaging experiences.
    • Basic Sentence Building: As phonics knowledge grows, students begin forming sentences using sight words and common phrases.
    • Pronunciation Accuracy: With phonics, students easily learn to differentiate sounds like “L” vs. “R” and short vs. long vowels, leading to more natural spoken English.
    • Transcription and Dictation: Students actually apply their phonetic knowledge in class, building upon their reading skills to be able to listen then write in English naturally, then read it aloud, speaking in natural English.

    • Expanded Transcription and Dictation: Students continue to apply their knowledge of English phonetics to take proper notes in English applying the four main language skills: listening, writing, reading and speaking.
  • Ages 13+ (Older Beginners & Adults):
    • Breaking Bad Habits: Many older learners struggle with English pronunciation due to a lack of phonics training. Lexis uses phonics strategically to correct common errors.
    • Reading & Writing Support: Phonics-based strategies help older students read unfamiliar words and improve their spelling accuracy.
    • Speaking Confidence: With targeted phonics practice, students gain more clarity in pronunciation and feel more confident speaking English aloud.

Why Phonics at Lexis is Different

First of all, our teachers have so much experience with many different students. We all teach native speakers (true bilinguals), returnee students (帰国子女), and standard students (learners who have based all their studies in Japan), so we can spot the differences in students easily and quickly correct mistakes. We find balance between the groups of learners. Often, students who have lived abroad but are losing their native intonation start to slip into "Japanese English" habits. We are swift yet gentle in correcting these habits to keep students speaking with a fluent, native-sounding intonation and cadence. All of our teachers some from the USA, England or Canada and speak English in an easy to understand way. It is of course spoken at a native level. This sets the tone for class. Katakana-English is not useful in the real world, so we correct, praise, and inspire kids to use English in the proper way.

Further, this helps students get ready for countless listening tests throughout junior high school and high school. The foundational understanding of how to speak English is so incredibly important.

英検吉祥寺レクシス1級準1級2級準2級3級4級5級.Jpg

Furthermore, unlike other 英会話, 一般英会話 students at Lexis are nearby high-level students all the time. 帰国子女 students may be in the lobby chatting in English when the 一般英会話 course is starting to begin. This creates positive reinforcement of correct English pronunciation, speech, and cadence from student peers, not just adults or teachers. Kids see these fantastic students around them and aspire to emulate their skills. This natural exposure to fluent speakers accelerates learning and builds confidence in a way that a traditional classroom setting cannot.

English before Romaji

At Lexis, we prioritize teaching English pronunciation before students are exposed to Romaji in school, which often distorts their ability to produce natural English sounds. Because Romaji is based on Japanese syllabic patterns, it can lead to incorrect pronunciation habits, such as adding extra vowels to words (“catto” instead of “cat” or “baddo” instead of “bird”). By focusing on phonics and natural English speech patterns early on, we help students develop accurate pronunciation and listening skills before Romaji influences their learning. This proactive approach ensures that children build a strong foundation in real English pronunciation, rather than relying on Japanese phonetic approximations that can be more difficult to correct later.

If students have already learned Romaji in elementary school...

Romaji is a great tool for English speakers learning Japanese, but for learners of Japanese, it is still difficult, because Romaji is so different from English. In university level Japanese study courses, professors take a few lessons to really emphasize the differences between Romaji and English. Like those university classes, at Lexis, we take the same approach. Romaji and English are entirely different languages. By separating sounds letter by letter, we build an understanding of the major differences between the two languages.

When I was a high school teacher more than ten years ago, I watched students who had memorized words from vocabulary lists, who could answer Eiken 2 level questions, but still mispronounced words like "dome" (saying ドメ!), "mosquito" (saying モスキt [over correction, cutting the o!]), and generally struggling with an word that ends in "L" or "le". With Lexis's experienced teachers, we know what to watch out for, because we know the mistakes kids often make. So we correct those problems before they become an issue!
