Jared MaierKichijoji is renown for its international chains, shopping, restaurants and convenience. Many shopkeepers, hotel staff, and restaurant workers will speak to you in English. But how about doctors or dentists? For local English speakers, or folks nearby on the chuo line, where can we go? Or for the unfortunate traveller who needs services during their stay... If you are near Kichijoji but you don't exactly have a strong grasp on the Japanese language, or simply just want to speak to a doctor in English, this short guide is for you! This guide is written by myself, an American local English teacher here at Lexis who speaks Japanese but gets spoken to in English because I look like a tourist...

Dr. Numata is the English speaking doctor I can highly recommend. His office has recently moved from Kichijoji to Mitaka, it is conveniently located close to Mitaka station. As an English speaker he can easily explain medical conditions in clear and easy to understand English. Multiple times he has walked me through the usage of medications. Another serious plus with his is he will give you options! In my 15 plus years in Japan, I very rarely had a doctor who asked me if I had a preference. Dr. Numata is that doctor. He called my family to check in with us after we found out we were sick with CoVid-19, and sent us medicine through the mail.

Dr. Fujimoto is a little outside of Kichijoji near a place called Mitakadai station, it is still very convenient to get there by bicycle. Dr. Fujimoto lived and practiced medicine for many years in England before moving back to Japan to open up his own pediatrics clinic. He is very precise with his diagnoses, and has many years of experience with both English speaking and Japanese speaking patients. His English accent is easy to understand. He speaks very clearly and is extremely helpful to those who cannot speak Japanese well!
ふじもと先生は吉祥寺から少し外れた三鷹台駅の近くにおられますが、自転車でのアクセスも便利です。ふじもと先生はイギリスで長年医療の現場で働かれた経験を持ち、日本に戻って小児科クリニックを開業されました。診断が非常に正確で、英語を話される患者さん、日本語を話される患者さんの両方に多くの経験を持たれています。英語のアクセントが聞き取りやすく、非常に明瞭に話されるため、日本語が不得意な方にも大変助けになります！

Narumi Dental Clinic is located close to Kichijoji. This dentist is both a good dentist, and is also very witty. You will enjoy speaking with him in English while he makes sure your teeth are in the best condition possible. The friendly and warm atmosphere is nice because when you need a dentist, you never want to be in a harsh atmosphere. Thankfully this place is different. After your procedure is finished, you will likely come back with cleaner teeth and a smile on your face because of something he said.
