One of the many challenges of raising English speaking children in Japan is trying to do everything yourself. For foreigners living in the Mitaka, Musashino and Kichijoji area, there may be a few more international people than in other areas of Tokyo. Regardless, it is still unlikely families will have access to strong networks of native English speakers or strong English speakers in general. The average family may be able to keep some level of English at home, but as soon as children leave, they go directly into Japanese mode. After a number of years, some of these children may default into speaking Japanese and may even give up speaking English at home. How then can we as parents continue our efforts to keep our children speaking and learning the English language?

日本で英語を話す子供を育てる上で、多くの困難があるのは、すべてを自分でやろうとしていることです。 三鷹、武蔵野、吉祥寺周辺に住む外国人にとっては、東京の他の地域に比べて、国際的な人が少し多いかもしれません。 とはいえ、英語を母国語とする人や、一般的に英語が得意な人の強力なネットワークにアクセスできる家庭は、まだまだ少ないでしょう。 一般家庭では、ある程度の英語力は保てるかもしれないが、子供が離れると、そのまま日本語モードになってしまう。 何年か経つと、日本語がデフォルトになり、家庭で英語を話すのをやめてしまう子もいます。 では、私たち親はどのようにすれば、子どもたちが英語を話し、英語を学び続けるための努力を続けることができるのでしょうか。

In a case study from one of our parents, an English teacher parent no less, he was suffering from that very problem. Hours and hours of English lessons were presented to his children at home. The effects were outstanding at first. His children were happy to speak in English, making it close to their native language outright. That is a truly impressive task here in Japan. Unfortunately, as time went on, and his children got older, they started to "slip" out of English mode more and more. Communicating with him at home still meant English was spoken to the father, but between friends, peers, and even the siblings themselves, it all became Japanese. Furthermore, the "homework" the parent was assigning to the kids became "mendokusai" or "a pain" for the kids to do. After one too many battles with his children, he decided that something needed to change.

When the kids were no longer interested in doing the parent's lessons, that English teacher parent of ours needed to know what to do. As we all naturally do, he contemplated international school. While they are a surefire way to get children speaking English, they may be cost prohibitive for some people. Another worry was the risk of an international school leaving students ready for life outside of Japan, but not ready for life in it. His family didn't want to give up on Japan, or working here in the future. They simply wanted the best of both worlds. English and Japanese. After some careful thought, and an information session or two, he contacted Lexis for the first time.

Lexis is not a magic bullet. It did however make a big difference in their studies. When this father first brought these kids to us at Lexis Language Center, we didn't automatically get them to love studying English. What we did do was instill certain levels of competition, creativity, sporadic fun, and motivation into them. According to the father, each child responded differently.

For the youngest boy, he really caught on to the competition factor when he joined the returnee and bilingual course at Lexis. Being in a class with other boys, comparing himself to them, and actually competing with them in each lesson brought him a level of excitement he couldn't experience at home. Every week he wanted to be the best, which motivated him to practice his homework at a high level.

Teaching English Writing

For our parent's daughter, she noticed immediately that she was good at writing. She had a level of creativity that was brought out by writing prompts, and so she had a lot of fun creating stories. Of course at Lexis all English writing is checked by a native speaker, but also, children have a chance to share their stories with each other. So kids have their stories "checked" by their English speaking peers too. When she wrote fun stories, other children reacted and laughed at her humor and enjoyed her fun characters.

The third boy was a bit older. Already entering junior high school at a nearby school in Mitaka, he was comfortable with English as he was the first born and got the most English attention in the earliest days, but he was sick of learning from dad. Not to mention dad was running out of resources for him! As he worked his way through the Lexis system, he got to work with Lexis teachers, who had the advantage of years of experience, as well as an exciting group of returnee and international students as classmates.
